Information Re-use Policy
New regulations came into force in July 2005, following the EU Directive on the re-use of public sector information that encourage government departments to make as much information as possible available for re-use. All materials produced by the Central Office of Information are Crown copyright. As a Trading Fund, the Central Office of Information holds a Delegation of Authority from the Controller of HMSO which permits us to license the re-use of our Crown copyright materials.
We aim to comply with the requirements of the Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005 and COI are members of the Information Fair Trader Scheme (IFTS), which ensures that we license information for re-use in an open, fair and transparent manner. The Chief Executive has signed a commitment to the IFTS Principles.

Information Asset Register
The COI's Information Asset Register (IAR) is part of a programme led by the Office of Public Sector Information to improve access to the electronic and hard copy information assets of all government departments and agencies.
This register was launched in July 2007 and we will continue to add information to the IAR as it becomes available.
Can the Central Office of Information refuse to grant a license?
The Chief Executive has made a commitment in principle that all information created by the COI will be licensed for use by any customer. However, because of the specialised content of some of our materials, it may be necessary for some requests to be refused.
